LexisNexis Partners with OverDrive To Debut Digital Library

LexisNexis announced an agreement with OverDrive to create the LexisNexis Digital Library on April 23. Available now on a limited basis for “select pilot customers,” LexisNexis spokesperson Marc Osborn told LJ, it will be available broadly early in the third quarter of 2012.

Harvard Releases Metadata Into Public Domain

Harvard is making more than 12 million catalog records from its 73 libraries publicly available under a Creative Commons public domain license, the university announced today.

The records can be bulk downloaded from Harvard in the standard MARC21 format, and are available for programmatic access by software applications via API at the Digital Public Library of America(DPLA).

The records contain bibliographic information about books, videos, audio recordings, images, manuscripts, maps, and more, including creator, title, publisher, date, language, and subject headings, plus descriptors usually invisible to end users, such as the equalization system used in a recording.

Las bibliotecas más prestigiosas del mundo tienen su correlato en el mundo digital, donde los formatos impresos se presentan junto a otros multimedia -como audio o video- que los complementan, y que están asociados a otro modo de producción, organización, distribución y apropiación de la información. Sin embargo, lo que habitualmente llamamos bibliotecas digitales se distinguen de las virtuales, que abren un nuevo mundo de servicios en línea, adaptados a las demandas de los usuarios.

Las redes avanzadas o Redes Nacionales de Investigación y Educación

(National Research and Education Network, NREN, por su denominación en

inglés) y sus comunidades de usuarios, constituyen un medio ambiente propicio

para la investigación científica y tecnológica y los procesos de innovación. Diversas

tecnologías y servicios se han diseñado y probado en estas redes, para luego

masificarse en un proceso de transferencia continuo y creciente. El ejemplo más

socorrido es la propia World Wide Web, pero existen otras tecnologías como la

transferencia de archivos, los sistemas P2P (peer-to-peer), el uso extensivo de

videoconferencias, y la investigación en web semántica, por citar algunas. Todas

ellas fueron iniciativas pioneras que se probaron o masificaron inicialmente en las

redes avanzadas y luego migraron al llamado Internet comercial.
